Overview

Swaraj Dweep, still widely known as Havelock, is the island most people picture when they think of the Andamans. It holds the archipelago's most famous beach, its best diving, and the widest choice of resorts and restaurants, which is why most itineraries give it the largest share of nights on a typical trip. Its interior mixes paddy fields, coconut groves, and small settlements along the main road.

The island sits roughly two hours from Port Blair by fast ferry, close enough for an easy transfer yet far enough to feel like a genuine getaway. Whether you are learning to dive, chasing a sunset at Radhanagar, or simply doing very little on the sand, this island is built for it. Restaurants range from beach shacks to proper dining rooms, and accommodation covers everything from budget guesthouses to high-end resorts, so travellers on any budget find a comfortable base here. The pace is relaxed throughout, and the water is always the main event.

What to see and do

Radhanagar Beach

Long sweep of white sand regularly rated among Asia's best, and a classic sunset spot.

Scuba diving

Island's diving hub with PADI schools and dive sites for beginners through to advanced divers.

Elephant Beach

Reached by boat or short trek, a go-to spot for snorkelling, sea walks, and water sports.

Kalapathar Beach

Quieter stretch backed by dark rocks and green forest, especially beautiful in the morning light.

How to reach

Private air-conditioned catamarans and government ferries run several times daily from Port Blair, taking about two hours.

Good to know

  • Book your ferry to Havelock one to two weeks ahead in the December to January peak.
  • Planning to certify as a diver, build in a spare morning since courses run over days.
  • Reach Radhanagar around fifteen minutes before sunset if you want a good spot on sand.
