Overview

Diglipur is the largest town in North Andaman and the base for the archipelago's most adventurous corner, a long haul from Port Blair that is best broken with an overnight stop somewhere along the way north. Rice paddies and small farming settlements line much of the road north.

The reward for the distance is untouched scenery, turtle nesting beaches, and Saddle Peak, the highest point in the Andaman Islands, along with a noticeably slower and more local pace than anywhere in the southern triangle. Ross and Smith Islands, joined by a natural sandbar that appears at low tide, are widely considered among the most beautiful spots anywhere in the Andamans, well worth the long journey to reach them. This is slow, nature-led territory suited to longer trips, and travellers who make it this far usually come away calling it a genuine highlight of their whole visit.

What to see and do

Ross & Smith Islands

Twin islands connected by a stunning sandbar, featuring clear waters, white beaches, and unforgettable views.

Saddle Peak

Highest peak in the Andaman Islands, offering a scenic trek through protected national park landscapes.

Kalipur Beach

Famous turtle-nesting beach where multiple species arrive here during the seasonal nesting period each year.

Alfred Caves

Remote limestone cave network requiring a forest trek, ideal for adventurous travellers seeking further exploration.

How to reach

Long road journey from Port Blair of roughly 10 to 12 hours, often with an overnight stop.

Good to know

  • Do not attempt Diglipur as a day trip, the travel distance involved is genuinely real.
  • Trekking Saddle Peak needs an early start along with a valid forest department permit.
  • Facilities here are basic compared with Havelock, so plan your stay accordingly in advance.
