Overview
Red Skin Island is a protected island within the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, known for vibrant coral reefs, crystal clear waters, and abundant marine life close to shore. It is one of the best places near Port Blair for snorkelling and glass-bottom boat rides together. There is no permanent settlement anywhere on the island itself.
The island usually opens seasonally as an alternative to Jolly Buoy, with the Forest Department alternating access between the two to give the fragile reef ecosystem time to recover fully. This keeps the island uncrowded and the water unusually clear compared with busier spots closer to town. Once ashore, the surrounding reef more than makes up for the small beach itself, with coral close enough to shore for even inexperienced snorkellers to reach comfortably, without needing a boat or a long swim out.
