How to build your Andaman itinerary

A good Andaman trip is less about the list of sights and more about how you sequence them. This guide covers the pieces every itinerary is built from, how many nights to give each island, the order that saves you backtracking, and the mistakes that quietly ruin an otherwise good plan.

Start with total nights

Everything else follows from this. Andaman rewards a slower pace, so the honest question is how many nights you can give it, not how many islands you can cram in. Most first trips land between four and seven nights across the same three islands. The difference is breathing room.

Sequence the islands to avoid backtracking

All flights and ferries start from Port Blair, so the natural flow is a loop that ends back where you started. The order below keeps transfers short and leaves you near the airport on your final night.

1

Arrive Port Blair, keep day one light

Flights land here. Check in, see Cellular Jail and the evening light and sound show, and ease into island time. Do not overload the arrival day.

2

Morning ferry to Swaraj Dweep (Havelock)

Take an early sailing so you reach by midday and keep the afternoon for the beach. This is where most of your nights and activities sit.

3

Short hop to Shaheed Dweep (Neil)

Neil is a brief ferry from Havelock, not back via Port Blair. Its calm, small scale makes a good wind-down before heading home.

4

Return to Port Blair for your flight out

Ferry back on your final full day and stay the last night in or near Port Blair. Never plan the return ferry and the flight on the same tight window.

Ferries are the backbone of the plan

The three islands are linked only by sea. Private air-conditioned catamarans such as Makruzz, Nautika and Green Ocean are faster and more comfortable than the government ferries, and they sell out first in peak season. Book the popular Port Blair to Havelock leg around one to two weeks ahead, earlier over the December to January super peak.

RouteApprox durationNotes
Port Blair to Havelock90 min to 2 hrThe busiest leg, multiple daily sailings, book early
Havelock to NeilAround 1 hrShort hop, do this rather than routing back via Port Blair
Neil to Port BlairAround 1.5 hrSeveral direct sailings daily for your return

Timings shift with sea conditions and operator schedules, so reconfirm a day before each sailing rather than trusting a schedule booked weeks earlier.

The pieces that fill the days

Once the islands and nights are fixed, these are the components you slot into each stop. Match them to the island that does them best rather than repeating the same thing everywhere.

History and city sights

Cellular Jail, Ross Island and North Bay sit around Port Blair. One focused day covers them, which is why Port Blair works as an arrival and departure base rather than a long stay.

Diving and water sports

Havelock is the hub. Try dives, Open Water certification, snorkelling and sea walks all cluster here. Build a spare morning in if you want to certify, as courses run over more than one day.

Signature beaches

Radhanagar on Havelock for the headline sunset, Bharatpur and Laxmanpur on Neil for calm shallow water. Mornings are quietest and best for photos.

Day trips

Baratang caves and the mud volcano, or Elephant Beach by boat, are add-ons for longer trips. They eat a full day each, so only add them past five nights.

Common mistakes that break an itinerary

!

No buffer before the flight home. Rough seas cancel ferries with little warning. Returning to Port Blair the night before departure, not the same morning, protects the whole trip.

!

Too many islands, too few nights. Adding a fourth island to a short trip means more time on ferries than on beaches. Depth beats breadth here.

!

Booking ferries late in peak season. The fast private catamarans sell out first. Leaving it to arrival often means slower boats or awkward timings.

!

Overloading the arrival day. After a long flight, a packed day one rarely goes well. Keep it light and start properly the next morning.

!

Ignoring the season. Monsoon means frequent cancellations. If you travel June to September, keep the plan flexible and expect changes.
